Is having a sense of humour as a teacher important?

Teaching course material can sometimes be tedious for both students and teachers. How can we make our lessons more engaging and enjoyable for us and our students?

The best form of entertainment and engagement is in fact through comedy and humour, which brings people together through shared laughter.

“Humour is by far the most significant activity of the human brain “

Edward de Bono

Humour can be hard to define but we can recognise it when we hear or see it, whether it is in the form of sarcasm, irony or a joke. Recognised by the Greeks as a dramatic genre, “ancient comedy” can have various functions and play different roles within diverse contexts. For example, comedy and humour can be used as a therapeutic tool, a social icebreaker or an engagement tool within your classroom.

There are multiple types of comedy that can be recognised all around us and implemented into our everyday social interactions such as situational comedy, dark comedy, physical comedy (slapstick) etc.

There is an importance of comedy and humour in everyday life as comedy fills a central need in every society as it allows people to cope with challenges, reduce stress, boost energy levels and improve social life.

Our LOL project teaches that comedy and humour is in fact a central tool of society but also a crucial aspect within teaching.

Comedy and humour techniques can be used within our classroom as an effective learning tool as this contagious laughter naturally binds a sense of community within schools bringing students and teachers together.

This project establishes that humour does in fact activate students’ sense of wonder which in turn catalyses learning and builds retention of new material.

Providing humour and comedy to your students will not only boost student engagement but create a safe and comfortable environment for your students, an enjoyable school atmosphere where learning is interactive and free-spirited.

Within our LOL project, through the exploration of modules such as joke structure, the origins of stand-up comedy, meme humour and many other, teachers will be able to recognise the importance of humour within the educational sphere and learn that bringing a sense of humour into your classroom is more beneficially than you might have thought.

Bring out your inner comedian and watch your classroom laugh their way to success in just three easy steps!
